Winston Branch

Winston Branch was born in 1947 in Castries, Saint Lucia. He was sent to London for schooling as a child in the late 1950s and went on to study painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, earning a BA in Painting from 1966 to 1970. His first solo exhibition was held at the Arts Lab in London in 1967, while he was still a student. After graduating from the Slade, he won the British Prix de Rome, which brought him to the British School at Rome from 1971 to 1972.

Branch's work is rooted in large scale, layered acrylic abstraction, built through color and light rather than figuration. In 1976 he received a DAAD fellowship that took him to Berlin (some sources give 1977 for this fellowship); a body of paintings from that period disappeared from his Berlin studio and did not resurface publicly until 2025, when they were reported on by The Guardian. In 1978 he received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in Painting. He has also served as a professor of art at the University of California, Berkeley. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Greenwich in 2020, and in 2024 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Birthday Honours for services to the creative and fine arts. He continues to exhibit actively, including new work presented in London in 2025 and 2026.

Branch has long been described by critics in terms of color and light rather than subject matter, with his abstract canvases read as an exploration of mood and interior states built through paint handling alone.
