Wu Ding

Wu Ding was born in 1982 in Shanghai, China, where he continues to live and work. (One gallery biography lists his birth year as 1981; most other sources, including his own professional listings, give 1982.) He earned a BA in Sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts at Shanghai Normal University between 2002 and 2006, then returned to graduate study nearly a decade later, completing an MFA in contemporary video and intermedia at the School of Intermedia Art, China Academy of Art, in Hangzhou, graduating in 2017.

His practice centers on photography, video, and text, used together to examine what galleries describe as the "order" that structures time and space, and an "inner order" that can be perceived but not directly stated. His best-known projects are The Rhythm of Ultimate, first shown as a solo exhibition at the Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum in 2016 and continued at Don Gallery in Shanghai in 2017, and The History of the Circle, which he presented as parallel solo exhibitions at the Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival in Xiamen and at the Art Museum of China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, both in 2019.

His work has also appeared in group exhibitions at K11 Art Museum and the Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai, and at Today Art Museum in Beijing. These appearances document exhibition history; they are not evidence that any of these museums holds his work in a permanent collection, and no such acquisition has been publicly confirmed.

The name Wu Ding is shared with other figures in Chinese history and culture, most notably the Shang dynasty king Wu Ding (武丁), who ruled roughly three thousand years earlier, and is unrelated to the painter Wu Guanzhong. This profile concerns the contemporary artist born in 1982.
