Why Wyatt Kahn matters
Wyatt Kahn is a New York based artist whose shaped, multi panel canvases sit deliberately between painting and sculpture, and whose work has moved into major museum collections and a high profile public commission well before his auction market has had much chance to develop. For a collector, he is an example of an artist whose institutional validation, museum acquisitions, a Public Art Fund commission in Manhattan, sustained gallery representation on two continents, is running well ahead of a still thin and unsettled secondary market.

Biography
Wyatt Kahn was born in 1983 in New York. He earned a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2006 and an MFA from Hunter College in New York in 2012. He lives and works in New York.
Kahn's practice grew out of training as a sculptor, and he has described his multi panel, shaped canvas works as paintings even though they are built and assembled like sculptural objects. The recurring approach is to construct a picture from separate panels, often raw or minimally painted, that are then joined into a single geometric composition, treating the seams and shapes themselves as the subject rather than any image applied to the surface.
His institutional profile developed through a string of solo presentations: a 2014 solo show at Galerie Eva Presenhuber in Zurich, a 2015 solo project titled Work staged as part of the Performa 15 Biennial at the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre in New York, and an early solo museum exhibition, Object Paintings, at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, also in 2015. In 2016 he had a solo exhibition, Variations on an Object, at MART in Trento, Italy. His work has also appeared in group exhibitions at the Whitechapel Gallery in London (2017) and in Jay DeFeo: The Ripple Effect, which traveled from Le Consortium in Dijon to the Aspen Art Museum in 2018. In 2022 Xavier Hufkens presented his solo show Pile Ups/Cut Outs in Brussels, and from June 2022 to February 2023 the Public Art Fund presented Life in the Abstract, a group of his sculptures in New York's City Hall Park, his largest and most visible public commission to date.
Critical reception
Institutional and gallery texts consistently frame Kahn's work around the tension between painting and sculpture, treating his shaped, multi panel canvases as objects that occupy both categories at once. Public Art Fund's exhibition text for his 2022 to 2023 City Hall Park commission, Life in the Abstract, described him as having explored the relationship between painting and sculpture throughout his career, framing the move into monumental outdoor sculpture as a continuation of that inquiry rather than a departure from it. That same reading, of geometric abstraction built from constructed, sculptural means, runs through gallery and museum texts from his 2015 Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis show onward.
Market
Kahn's secondary market is thin and the available auction record should be read with real caution. The highest price for his work documented in public reporting is GBP 122,500 (about USD 195,935) for Sideways (2012), a raw canvas cut out construction, sold at Phillips in London and described in contemporaneous press as his first appearance at auction. The exact sale date is not confirmed in available sources, with press accounts placing the sale sometime between 2013 and 2014. This figure cannot be confirmed as his definitive all time auction high, and no larger sale has been identified since.

What collectors should know
Kahn has no catalogue raisonne, and works should be verified through his representing galleries rather than any independent authentication body. His museum collection record is strong and broad for an artist of his generation, but his auction history is very limited, with only a small number of public sales and genuine uncertainty about which of them holds his true price record. He is currently placed through a mix of galleries in different markets, Galerie Eva Presenhuber and Xavier Hufkens in Europe, and Rodder in New York, which is typical of a career still being built out rather than one with a single, settled primary market.
