Why Xu Zhen matters
Xu Zhen is one of the most prominent figures to emerge from mainland China's contemporary art scene since the late 1990s, known as much for a body of provocative installation, video, and performance work as for reinventing how a contemporary artist can operate. In 2009 he founded MadeIn Company, a collective production platform through which he now presents most of his output under the trademark XU ZHEN, treating authorship itself as a subject of the work. For a collector, he represents a case where deep institutional and biennial validation across Asia, Europe, and the United States has so far outpaced a comparatively thin and young secondary auction market.

Biography
Xu Zhen was born in 1977 in Shanghai, China, where he still lives and works. He trained at the Shanghai Arts & Crafts Institute, also translated as the Shanghai Art and Design Academy, a technical and vocational program rather than a university, and graduated in 1996. In interviews he has said he chose not to continue on to a university-level art education, a decision he has described as a positive rather than a limitation for his practice.
After graduating, Xu Zhen moved to Beijing before returning to Shanghai, building a practice across installation, sculpture, video, performance, painting, and photography that frequently used appropriation and satire to probe art-world institutions, consumer culture, and cross-cultural symbols. He participated in the 49th Venice Biennale in 2001, as the youngest Chinese artist included, and returned to the Biennale in 2005, and his work has since been shown at MoMA PS1 in New York, Tate Liverpool, the Lyon Biennial, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, among other venues.
In 2009 he founded MadeIn Company, an artist-run production company that functions as a collective studio and production entity, and much of his subsequent work has been issued under the brand XU ZHEN. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles gave him a solo presentation in 2019. As of 2025 he had relocated his studios and offices to Fuxing Island in Shanghai, and in 2025 and 2026 he mounted the solo exhibition Instant Contemplation at ShanghART's M50 space in Shanghai.
Critical reception
Gallery, museum, and art-press sources consistently describe Xu Zhen as a defining and provocative figure in contemporary Chinese art, singled out for treating collective authorship, through MadeIn Company and the XU ZHEN brand, as part of the work itself rather than a studio convenience. His practice is repeatedly framed around satire and appropriation, using consumer objects, religious and cultural imagery, and art-world conventions to unsettle expectations about who makes a work and what it means. No single critic quotation could be verified precisely enough for direct reproduction here, but the throughline across profiles from Ocula, ArtAsiaPacific, and artnet News is of an artist whose institutional reception has grown steadily from his early 2000s biennial appearances to major solo museum treatment by the late 2010s.
Market
Xu Zhen's recorded auction history is thin relative to his institutional standing. His documented all-time auction high is Red Hugging Lovers, which realized HKD 3,780,000 at Phillips Hong Kong on 26 September 2024. A 2018 Sotheby's Hong Kong sale of the installation XUZHEN SUPERMARKET for HKD 1,600,000, reported at the time as roughly USD 200,000, had previously stood as his best-known auction result and remains one of his most publicized sales. Other tracked lots, largely sold through Phillips in Hong Kong, have realized considerably less, generally in a range of roughly HKD 150,000 to 570,000, which points to a market with wide dispersion between headline installation works and smaller pieces.

What collectors should know
There is no published catalogue raisonne for Xu Zhen, and verification runs through his own MadeIn Company and XU ZHEN operation and through his representing galleries, ShanghART and James Cohan, rather than through an independent scholarly authority. His secondary market is built on a small number of tracked sales, so any single auction result, including the current 2024 high, should be read as an indicator rather than a stable benchmark. The gap between his deep museum and biennial presence and his comparatively limited auction volume is the central fact for a collector to weigh.
