Yan Lei

Yan Lei was born in 1965 in Langfang, Hebei Province, China. He graduated from the Hebei School for Arts and Crafts in 1982, then studied printmaking at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou, now known as the China Academy of Art, graduating in 1991. After graduating he moved to Hong Kong, where he lived and worked for roughly seven years, before establishing a studio in the Xicheng district of Beijing in 2003. He is considered among the first generation of Chinese conceptual artists, and his practice spans painting, installation, video, photography, and performance.

Much of his best known work takes found or digitally altered photographic imagery, official portraits, banknotes, art-historical reproductions, and popular culture, and reprocesses it into flattened, reduced-color paintings and series such as Sparkling. Critics and curators have read the work as a sustained inquiry into the systems and power structures that shape how art and images circulate, including the art market and auction system itself. He represented China at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003 and has twice been included in Documenta, in 2007 and 2012. He lives and works between Beijing and Hong Kong.

Yan Lei is widely discussed as one of the first generation of Chinese conceptual artists to interrogate the art system itself rather than working purely within a painterly tradition. His recurring engagement with photographic reproduction, banknotes, and appropriated imagery, including works referencing auction houses and canonical modern paintings, has been read as a critique of how value and meaning are assigned within contemporary art markets and institutions.
