Youn Myeong-Ro

Youn Myeong-Ro was born in 1936 in Jeongeup, South Korea (also romanized Jungeup or Chongup in older sources). While still a student, he won the top award at Korea's National Art Exhibition (Gukjeon) in 1959, and he earned a BFA in painting from the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University in 1960. Around that time he is credited with helping form the Korean Association of Artists, placing him among the founding figures of Korean Art Informel, the material-driven, gestural abstraction that emerged in Korea in the years after the Korean War.
