Yu Dafu

Yu Dafu is a case where honesty about the record matters more than filling a template. He was a central figure of modern Chinese literature, a co-founder of the Creation Society and a defining voice of the May Fourth generation, best known for the 1921 story collection Sinking. He was not, in any conventional sense, a visual artist with a gallery, a market, or a body of collected paintings or sculpture. This profile documents his life and reputation on that basis, and is transparent about the fact that his art market record, such as it is, consists of one confirmed auction sale of a calligraphy work and a small number of unpriced manuscripts and calligraphy items, rather than a continuous auction history.

Yu Dafu was born Yu Wen on 7 December 1896 in Fuyang, Zhejiang, and took the courtesy name Dafu by which he became known. He received his early schooling in Jiaxing and Hangzhou, China, including at Hangchow Presbyterian College, also known as Yuying Academy, a missionary-run school.

He then went to Japan, where he completed secondary studies by around 1916 and went on to study economics at Tokyo Imperial University. Sources differ on the exact year he began that course of study, but agree he completed it and earned a degree in economics in 1922. While in Japan he became one of the founding members of the Creation Society in 1921, a group central to promoting modern literature in China, and that same year published Sinking, the story collection for which he is best remembered. Later works included the diary collection Nine Diaries and the novella Guoqu, known in English as The Past, which Britannica singles out as a critical favorite for its psychological depth.

In the 1930s and into the Second Sino-Japanese War, Yu Dafu worked as a writer and journalist involved in anti-Japanese cultural activity, eventually relocating to Southeast Asia, including time in Singapore. He later took refuge in Sumatra, then part of the Japanese-occupied Dutch East Indies. He died there in September 1945, shortly after Japan's surrender. The date most widely cited in reference sources, including Britannica and Wikipedia, is 17 September 1945, though other serious sources, including French, German, and Croatian encyclopedic entries and the Routledge Encyclopedia of Modernism, give only the month and year or describe him as having disappeared. Multiple sources state that he was killed by Japanese military police, but describe this as alleged or believed rather than fully documented, and note that his body was never recovered.

Within Chinese literary history, Yu Dafu is treated as a foundational modern writer. Britannica describes Guoqu, known in English as The Past, as the critics' favorite among his works, praised for its psychological depth. Encyclopedia.com notes that his writing is regarded by leading scholars as iconoclastic and controversial, a view consistent with contemporary reaction to Sinking, which was attacked by conservative critics as immoral and defended at the time by figures including the writer Zhou Zuoren. No exact, verbatim quotation from a named critic in a major outlet could be confirmed for this profile, and none is reproduced here.

Yu Dafu's auction market is thin and only partially documented. The one confirmed price-bearing sale identified in research is a work titled Calligraphy, which MutualArt's market summary records as having sold at Christie's Hong Kong in 2013 for USD 282,082, the highest price found for any work under his name. The exact sale date and lot details were not independently confirmed beyond that market summary, and no primary auction-house record of the sale was located. No gallery or estate currently represents him or his materials. Two further items surfaced in research without a confirmed price: a 2019 China Daily report on the manuscript of his 1932 short story She Is a Weak Woman being consigned to Xiling Yinshe Auction in Hangzhou, and a Christie's lot note describing a cursive-script calligraphy scroll that Yu Dafu gave to a friend during his years in Singapore, said to be the only surviving artwork from that period of his life. Given how limited this record is, any manuscript or calligraphy attributed to him that appears at auction should be evaluated on its own provenance, rather than as part of an established market with a track record.

Yu Dafu is a literary and historical figure rather than an artist with an active secondary market. There is no catalogue raisonne, no current gallery or estate representation, and only one confirmed price-bearing auction record identified for a work attributed to him, Calligraphy, which sold at Christie's Hong Kong in 2013 for USD 282,082 according to MutualArt's market summary, a figure not independently confirmed by a primary auction-house source. The rare items that do surface, principally manuscripts and calligraphy, should be authenticated through the provenance research of the specific auction house or institution offering them, not through any centralized program. Readers should treat this page as a biographical and critical record of an important modern Chinese writer, not as a market analysis, given how thin and inconsistent the available trading data is.
