Yuan Yunsheng

Yuan Yunsheng was born on April 4, 1937, in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, China. He was admitted in 1955 to the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, where he studied oil painting in the Third Studio under Dong Xiwen, graduating in 1962.

He became widely known in 1979 for the mural Water-Splashing Festival: An Ode to Life, commissioned for the newly built Beijing Capital International Airport. The mural's depiction of the female body in a public building was reported at the time as a marker of the country's cultural opening after the Cultural Revolution. From 1982 to 1996 he lived largely in the United States, holding an artist-in-residence post at Tufts University in 1982 to 1983 and later teaching at the University of Massachusetts, Smith College, and Harvard University. He returned to CAFA in 1996, where he directed the Fourth Painting Studio of the Oil Painting Department, served as deputy director of the Academic Committee, worked as a doctoral tutor, and led the Chinese Ancient Modeling Research Center.

In later years his practice continued to draw on Chinese myth, folklore, and history, worked through a fusion of oil, ink, and line drawing. Major retrospectives followed at CAFA Art Museum in 2023 and, most extensively, at the Long Museum West Bund in Shanghai in 2022. He had his first solo exhibition with Tang Contemporary Art, Beijing, in late 2025, and as of that exhibition continues to live and work in Beijing.

Yuan Yunsheng's reputation rests chiefly on institutional recognition rather than auction headlines. The 1979 Capital Airport mural is treated by Chinese museums and galleries as a landmark work of the reform era, and his subsequent teaching posts at CAFA and at Tufts, the University of Massachusetts, Smith College, and Harvard cemented his standing as a bridge between Chinese and Western painting traditions. The Long Museum's 2022 retrospective, described by the museum as his largest to date, and CAFA Art Museum's 2023 exhibition on his mural practice both framed him as a foundational figure in the transformation of Chinese art since the 1950s. Yuan Yunsheng's presence at auction is limited in volume. Artprice records roughly thirty auction lots for the artist, concentrated in drawings and works on paper, and Artnet lists around sixty works with recorded prices, neither showing results in the tens of millions. A Chinese market report cites a price of CNY 4,025,000 for the painting Wordless Monument (also translated as Wordless Stele); this figure could not be independently corroborated across major auction databases, and the auction house, city, and exact sale date remain unconfirmed. No higher publicly documented sale has been identified, though comprehensive auction data for this artist could not be fully verified. As of his 2025 exhibition Disorder and Coexistence, Tang Contemporary Art in Beijing has been his most recent gallery venue, though formal, ongoing representation was not independently confirmed.

His auction market is small in volume, and the best-documented top price, around CNY 4 million for Wordless Monument, lacks confirmed sale-house and date detail, so collectors should treat any single result as an indicative rather than definitive benchmark.
