Yue Minjun

Yue Minjun is one of the best-known figures of Chinese contemporary art, credited as a founding figure of the Cynical Realism movement that emerged in Beijing in the early 1990s. His signature image, a repeated, wide-grinning self-portrait, has become one of the most recognized motifs to come out of post-Tiananmen Chinese painting. For a collector, he represents an artist with deep institutional recognition and a globally dispersed gallery footprint, whose market peaked in the mid-2000s and has traded well below that peak in the years since.

Yue Minjun was born in 1962 in Daqing, in China's Heilongjiang province. After finishing high school around 1980, he trained and worked as an electrician, including a period at an ocean oil drilling company in Tianjin, before turning to formal art study. He studied oil painting at Hebei Normal University's Fine Arts Department; most gallery biographies date his graduation to around 1985, though a small number of sources give 1983 or 1989, and the discrepancy has never been resolved in public records.

In the early 1990s, Yue became associated with a loose group of Beijing-based artists working in what the critic Li Xianting termed Cynical Realism, a style using deadpan, ironic figuration to respond to the social disorientation of post-Tiananmen China. Yue's contribution was the laughing self-portrait: his own face, repeated and exaggerated into a fixed grin, deployed across paintings, sculpture, and prints as both a mask and a critique. The work brought him early international exposure, including inclusion in the 1999 Venice Biennale, and by the mid-2000s he was one of the most commercially prominent Chinese contemporary artists internationally.

As of this writing, Yue Minjun continues to live and work in Beijing, and remains active, with a 2026 solo exhibition, Crab, at Tang Contemporary Art in Hong Kong.

Yue Minjun is consistently described in institutional writing as a pioneer of Chinese contemporary art and a founding figure of Cynical Realism. Asia Society, organizer of his 2007 to 2008 Watercolors exhibition in New York, credits him with an iconic style that has gained international recognition. The critic Li Xianting, who named the Cynical Realism movement, characterized the laughing imagery associated with Yue and his peers as a response to the spiritual vacuum and disorientation of post-Tiananmen Chinese society, a framing that continues to shape how his work is discussed. Later institutional attention, including a 2012 to 2013 survey at the Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain in Paris, situated the laughing motif within a broader body of painting and sculpture rather than treating it as a single signature image.

Yue Minjun's market moved early and fast. In October 2007, his painting Execution (1995) sold at Sotheby's London for a price reported at the time as the highest ever paid for a work by a Chinese contemporary artist at auction, with figures in press coverage of roughly USD 5.9 to 6.0 million depending on the exact currency conversion used. That mark was surpassed the following year: on 24 May 2008, Gweong-Gweong (1993) sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong for HKD 54,000,000, about USD 6.9 million at the time, which market commentary from Artsy identifies as his current all-time auction record.

Since that 2008 peak, Yue's auction prices have settled well lower. Market data cited by HENI shows his highest auction result in the three years to mid-2024 was USD 259,500, for Three Beauties (2007) at Sotheby's Hong Kong in April 2024, a small fraction of the 2008 high. He is not represented by a single exclusive gallery; recent solo and group exhibitions and standing artist pages show him working concurrently with Tang Contemporary Art, Galerie Templon, Gary Tatintsian Gallery, and Opera Gallery, among others.

Authentication and provenance

No catalogue raisonne.

No published catalogue raisonne has been identified for this artist. Public sources do not document a certificate-of-authenticity program either; the artist works with several commercial galleries rather than a single exclusive representative, so provenance and verification should be confirmed directly with the gallery handling a given work.

There is no published catalogue raisonne for Yue Minjun, and no documented certificate-of-authenticity program; because he works with several galleries rather than one exclusive representative, buyers should confirm provenance directly with the gallery or house handling a specific work. His auction history shows a pronounced gap between a 2007 to 2008 peak, driven by Execution and Gweong-Gweong, and more recent results that are a small fraction of those highs, so recent comparable sales are a more reliable guide to current value than the historical record price. Some biographical details, including his exact birth date and the precise year he completed his art studies at Hebei Normal University, vary across otherwise reputable sources and are best treated as approximate.
