Why Yüksel Arslan matters
Yüksel Arslan spent more than sixty years building a single, self-invented visual language he called the "arture," a fusion of drawing, painting, and writing made with materials most artists would never touch: soil, blood, tobacco juice, egg yolk, honey, and soap in place of conventional paint. He worked largely apart from the commercial gallery circuit for most of his career, yet his numbered series on subjects from Marx's Capital to the human body earned him early critical recognition in Turkey and, decades later, a dedicated presentation in the collection of the Centre Pompidou. For collectors, he represents a rare case of an artist whose critical and institutional validation arrived well ahead of any developed auction market.

Biography
Yüksel Arslan was born on 24 July 1933 in the Eyüp district of Istanbul, Turkey, though at least one source gives his birth date as 27 July 1933. He attended Eyüp Secondary School from 1945 to 1948 and İstanbul Erkek Lisesi (Istanbul Boys' High School) from 1949 to 1952. He then enrolled in the Art History Department of Istanbul University's Faculty of Letters around 1952 to 1954, but left before completing a degree in order to devote himself to painting.
His early exhibitions in Istanbul, including a show sometimes referred to as Phallisme, drew strong critical attention in the late 1950s and are remembered as an early high point in his career, though the exact wording of that period's reviews is not confirmed in available sources. Around 1961 to 1962, Arslan settled permanently in Paris, where he continued to work until his death. There he coined the term "arture," combining the French "art" with the suffix seen in "peinture" and "ecriture," to describe his hybrid practice of dense figurative compositions annotated with handwritten text and built from unconventional, often organic materials.
Over the following decades he produced long numbered series, including Le Capital (1969 to 1975), based directly on Karl Marx's Capital, followed by Actualisation du Capital (1975 to 1980), Influences (1980 to 1984), Autoartures (1984 to 1986), L'Homme (1986 to 1999), Nouvelles Influences (2000 to 2010), and Journal (2011 to 2017). He received the Sedat Simavi Foundation Visual Arts Award in 1981 and France's Prix de l'Humour Noir, Grandville, in 1982. He continued working in his Paris studio until his death on 20 April 2017, in Paris, at the age of 84.
Critical reception
Arslan's reception moved from early notice in Istanbul to sustained institutional validation in Europe. His 1959 exhibition drew strong attention from Istanbul critics, though the exact language used at the time is not confirmed in available sources. Decades later, writer Elif Bayoglu, covering ArtInternational Istanbul for Artsy in 2014, named him among the most important Turkish-born artists working in contemporary art. Institutional recognition followed a similar arc: a touring survey of his Artures traveled to Kunsthalle Zurich, Kunsthalle Dusseldorf, and Kunsthalle Wien in 2012, he was included in the 55th Venice Biennale at the Arsenale in 2013, and from 2022 to 2023 the Centre Pompidou presented "La Dation Yüksel Arslan," bringing works into French national collections and installing a selection in the permanent galleries of the Musee national d'art moderne.
Market
Arslan's auction footprint is thin relative to his institutional standing. A market guide (aucties.com) reports that his works have traded between roughly EUR 500 and just over EUR 200,000, and identifies the drawing Updating "Kapital" (1958) as his top recorded result, sold in 2013 for a price reported as approximately EUR 212,150 in one instance and EUR 213,145 in another from the same source. The auction house, city, and exact sale date for that transaction were not confirmed in available research and should be treated as unverified pending a corroborating catalogue entry. His estate is represented by Dirimart in Istanbul, which has staged posthumous exhibitions including Commemoration (2017) and Sui generis (2023); Galeri Nev has also placed his work at international fairs, including the Armory Show in 2024.

What collectors should know
No catalogue raisonne for Arslan has been confirmed to exist; authentication questions are best directed to Dirimart, the Istanbul gallery that represents his estate and maintains his exhibition archive and CV. The public auction record is sparse, with a wide reported price range and at least one top result, Updating "Kapital" (1958), whose exact sale venue and date could not be verified across sources, so any single price point should be treated with caution rather than as a stable benchmark. His biographical record includes a minor, well-documented discrepancy over his exact birth date (24 versus 27 July 1933) and his move to Paris (1961 versus 1962), neither of which affects the authentication or provenance of his work. His strongest signal for durability is institutional: major holdings and dedicated presentations at the Centre Pompidou, LaM, Istanbul Modern, and ARTER indicate a body of work that museums have already chosen to collect and display at scale, even though the secondary market has not yet caught up in depth.
