Yunizar

Yunizar was born in 1971 in Talawi, Sawahlunto, West Sumatra, Indonesia. He studied at the Sekolah Menengah Seni Rupa (SMSR) in Padang in 1988, then entered the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (Institut Seni Indonesia, ISI) in Yogyakarta around 1993, graduating in 1999 with a degree in Fine Arts.

At ISI, he co-founded Kelompok Seni Rupa Jendela, the Jendela Art Group, together with fellow Minangkabau artists Handiwirman Saputra, Jumaldi Alfi, Yusra Martunus, and Rudi Mantofani. The collective became one of the most closely watched artist groups in Indonesian contemporary art, and Yunizar's own practice, built around loosely figurative, folk-inflected forms in painting and, later, bronze sculpture, grew out of that milieu. He continues to live and work in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Institutional recognition of Yunizar has tended to run ahead of a formal critical literature in major Western art publications; no verbatim assessment from a named critic at a major outlet was located for this profile.
