Zhang Linhai

Zhang Linhai was born in Shanghai in 1963. According to gallery and press accounts, he was adopted from a Shanghai orphanage as an infant and raised by adoptive farming parents in rural Hebei province, where he was brought at around age one. Multiple sources describe a childhood illness, reported as polio or a related infection, that left him with a permanently affected leg and hand and that shaped both his personal experience of marginalization and the recurring imagery of vulnerable, isolated children in his paintings. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Print, or printmaking, department of the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 1990.

His early exhibition history includes a solo show at the Cultural Gallery of She County in 1982 and an invited showing of the oil paintings Loneliness and Dream at the Capital Museum, presented in Taiwan and Hong Kong in 1991. According to auction house biographical material, his work was also included in the Sao Paulo Art Biennial in 1994, in La Biennale di Venezia in 1995, and in the China! exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Bonn in Germany in 1996, though this could not be independently corroborated beyond that single source.
