Zhang Peili

Zhang Peili was born in 1957 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. He graduated in 1984 from the oil painting department of the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, now the China Academy of Art, in Hangzhou. Sources describe the degree inconsistently, some calling it a BA and others an MFA, and this cannot be resolved definitively from public records.

In the 1980s he co-founded the Pond Society, an influential Hangzhou artist collective, and his early work appeared in the landmark 1989 China/Avant-Garde exhibition at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. He soon became known as the first artist to work in video in China, producing spare, socially and politically pointed video works that established him internationally as a pioneer of the medium. In 2003 he founded China's first new media art education program at the China Academy of Art, later formalized as its School of Intermedia Art, where he taught for nearly two decades. He also served as Executive Director of OCAT Shanghai from 2012 to 2022. He continues to live and work in Hangzhou, and remained an actively exhibiting and lecturing artist through 2026, including a solo show at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong and a public artist talk at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.

Institutional writing about Zhang Peili consistently frames him as foundational to Chinese contemporary art rather than as one figure among many. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum's artist materials state that "Zhang Peili is a central figure in Chinese contemporary art: he was the first artist to work in video in China," adding that "his clean, incisive video works, infused with sharp social and political commentaries, have made him a pioneer in video art internationally." His work has been the subject of major solo presentations at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and, more recently, back to back solo surveys at the Red Brick Art Museum and Taikang Art Museum in Beijing in 2024. He has also participated in the Venice Biennale, the Lyon Biennale, the Gwangju Biennale, the Guangzhou Triennial, and the Shanghai Biennale, and his 2017 inclusion in Art and China after 1989, Theater of the World at the Guggenheim in New York placed him within the canonical account of Chinese contemporary art's international emergence.

Zhang Peili's auction market is sparse and not yet consistently documented across major price databases. The clearest fully verifiable figure is a modest one: Heritage Auctions lists USD 5,125 as its internal record for the artist, paid on 19 September 2019 for Continuous Reproduction (polyptych), 1993, a gelatin silver print printed in 2004. A far larger figure has circulated in market reporting: the Observer, citing an ArtTactic report on the Hong Kong and China auction market, describes a reported sale of CNY 71,300,000 (about USD 10.1 million) for a painting titled X? at China Guardian in 2025, with the exact sale date not confirmed. Aggregate figures on MutualArt, which show realized painting prices up to roughly USD 10 million, are broadly consistent with this reported sale. However, no primary auction house lot page, exact sale date, or independent price database entry could be located to fully confirm the CNY 71.3 million figure, so it should be treated as reported rather than certified.

Zhang Peili's reputation rests overwhelmingly on museum and academic authority rather than a deep auction track record, and the auction data that does exist is inconsistent: a confirmed sale in the low thousands of dollars sits alongside a reported, but not fully corroborated, sale near USD 10 million. Collectors should treat any single auction figure for this artist with caution until it can be checked against a primary auction house record. No catalogue raisonne or certificate of authenticity program could be confirmed, and no current primary gallery representation could be verified with confidence, so provenance and direct confirmation through the artist's studio or the China Academy of Art carry unusual weight for this artist.
