Zhang Yingnan

Zhang Yingnan was born in 1981 in Baoji, Shaanxi Province, China. He earned a B.A. in Oil Painting from the Oil Painting Department of Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts in 2005, then settled in Beijing, where he continues to live and work. His practice centers on constructed interior spaces, empty rooms and architectural fragments rendered in a controlled, near-photorealist manner, which galleries have described as an exploration of alienation, memory, and the psychological pressures of contemporary urban life.

His early solo exhibitions included "That is Not an Oasis" at Summit Art Space, Beijing, in 2009, and "A Merciless Expression" at ARTMIA, Beijing, in 2012. Through the 2010s he built a consistent relationship with Soka Art Center, showing "Faraway" in Taipei in 2018, "Golden Express" in Beijing in 2019, and "Film" in Beijing in 2022, alongside a solo show at Gallery Skape in Seoul in 2014. His international profile expanded in 2024 with "Melting," a solo exhibition at KOENIG GALERIE in Seoul comprising works made largely in 2023, and with "If Unhindered," a solo exhibition at Hive Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing.
