Zhang Zipiao

Zhang Zipiao was born in 1993 in Beijing, China, where she continues to live and work. She studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore from 2011 to 2012 before completing a BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. Her paintings combine still life, floral, and food imagery with visceral, body-like distortion, a language critics and her own gallery texts trace partly to an early encounter with Francis Bacon's work while she was a student in Chicago.

Her exhibition history moved through a series of independent and gallery spaces in China before gaining wider international attention: solo shows at Ying Space, Beijing (2015), Star Gallery, Beijing (2017), Mou Projects, Hong Kong (2019), and White Space, Beijing (2018 and 2020). In 2021 she had her first solo exhibition with Salon 94 in New York, Heart of Anchor. In 2022 she mounted Moonquake at the Long Museum West Bund in Shanghai, described by Artsy as her debut institutional solo show. Solo exhibitions followed at Pond Society, Shanghai, and with LGDR in New York, both in 2023, and in 2025 she had her first solo exhibition in Europe, Blooming II, staged jointly by Galerie Derouillon and Salon 94 in Paris. She was named to Forbes' 30 Under 30 Asia list and recognized by Robb Report China's Best of the Best in its young artist category, both in 2019.

Critical attention has followed her rapid institutional rise rather than accumulating over a long career.
