Why Zheng Yi matters
Zheng Yi is an early-career Chinese contemporary artist working in installation and object-based sculpture, best known for a recurring "Box" series that uses enclosed structures to stage a spatial dialogue between the artwork, personal and collective memory, and the viewer. His name is shared by several unrelated Chinese cultural figures, including a Harbin-born oil painter and academic (born 1961), the scar-literature novelist Zheng Yi (born 1947), the Hong Kong-based ceramicist known professionally as Caroline Cheng, and the historical Qing-era pirate leader Zheng Yi Sao. This profile concerns the Tianjin-born installation artist, born 1980, who lives and works in Beijing. He sits at an early stage of market development, with a growing exhibition record in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen but, as of this writing, no confirmed presence in the public auction record. For a collector, he is a case study in an artist building gallery and institutional visibility ahead of any established secondary market.

Biography
Zheng Yi was born in 1980 in Tianjin, China, and now lives and works in Beijing. He graduated in 2003 with a bachelor's degree from the Chinese Painting Department of Tianjin Crafts Professional College, also referred to in gallery materials as the Tianjin Academy of Arts and Crafts, and completed a graduate course at the Chinese National Academy of Arts in 2005. His practice centers on the "Box" series, works built around enclosed, box-like structures that foreground the spatial presence of the object and use that structure to explore personal and collective memory.
His solo exhibition history includes A Steep Room at zapbeijing in Beijing in 2018, DarBoda at Tong Gallery and Projects in Beijing in 2021, and Fan-Darboda at Gene Gallery in Shanghai in 2025. He has also taken part in group exhibitions including the John Moores Painting Prize Exhibition at the Himalayas Museum in Shanghai in 2014, Building and Dreaming at By Art Matters in Hangzhou in 2022, and As Above, So Below at W.ONESPACE in Shenzhen in 2023.
Critical reception
Published commentary on Zheng Yi remains limited to gallery and exhibition texts rather than reviews in independent art press. Those texts, most notably from Gene Gallery's 2025 presentation of Fan-Darboda, frame his work around the "Box" as a structure that holds spatial presence and invites dialogue between the artwork and its audience, and around themes of personal and collective memory. No named critic writing in a major independent outlet has yet been identified discussing his work in the sources available for this profile.
Market
No confirmed public auction result for Zheng Yi has been located in the sources reviewed as of 2026-07-18. His activity to date appears to be concentrated in the primary market, through gallery-organized solo and group exhibitions in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, rather than in secondary-market sales. This is consistent with an early-career artist whose work has not yet built a track record at auction.

Authentication and provenance
No catalogue raisonne.
No catalogue raisonne or certificate-of-authenticity program has been identified for this artist. Given his early-career, primarily gallery-based market, verification currently rests with the exhibiting galleries and the artist's own studio records rather than a published scholarly catalogue.

What collectors should know
Zheng Yi's market is thin and largely undocumented at auction, and there is no catalogue raisonne or certificate-of-authenticity program in place; verification currently depends on the exhibiting galleries and the artist's own studio. Collectors researching this artist should also take care with identity, since several unrelated people share the name Zheng Yi, including an older Harbin-born painter, a novelist, and a Hong Kong ceramicist working under a related pinyin name. Given the limited public record, any claim about pricing, rarity, or institutional holdings for this artist should be treated as provisional until confirmed by additional primary sources.
