Zurab Tsereteli

Zurab Konstantinovich Tsereteli was born on 4 January 1934 in Tbilisi, then part of the Georgian SSR in the Soviet Union. He studied at the Faculty of Painting at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, graduating in 1958.

His early Soviet career combined painting with major public commissions. He received the USSR State Prize, a distinction that different biographical sources date variously to 1970, 1978, 1982, or 1983, followed by the Lenin Prize in 1976 and the title People's Artist of the USSR in 1980.

From the 1990s he worked mainly in Moscow, producing large, often contested public monuments, including the Peter the Great Monument, unveiled in 1997, and the Victory Memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill. He received the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 1996. He also contributed decorative work to the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. In 1997 he became President of the Russian Academy of Arts, a position he held until his death. He founded the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in 1999, opened the Zurab Tsereteli Art Gallery within the Russian Academy of Arts in Moscow in 2001, and opened the Zurab Tsereteli Museum of Modern Art in Tbilisi in 2012. He was also named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and received the UNESCO Picasso Gold Medal in 2007 and the rank of Chevalier of the Legion d'honneur from France in 2010.

Zurab Tsereteli died on 22 April 2025 at his home and studio in Peredelkino, in Moscow Oblast, Russia. Multiple obituaries, including those from major Russian and Georgian press and the Russian Academy of Arts, attribute the cause of death to cardiac arrest. He was 91.
